Interview With Alice Bradegirdle DailyOM: How have the practices in this course and the power of the "feminine energy" shaped your life?
AB: I was once a single mom on welfare, and when I hit rock bottom with depression, anxiety, and substance abuse, I could see that my lack of empowerment was having a very negative effect on my baby girl. That was when I had my awakening. I could see that if I did not get my life together, she was going to be the one who would suffer with the legacy of a mom who had lost herself. I had always been a dancer, practiced yoga, and more recently been certified as a group fitness instructor, and one day in my little bachelor apartment, all alone, I turned on the music and let my body flow. To my amazement, my body remembered how to move and connect, and I was instantly inspired to blend my various movement practices together in a sort of feminine fusion. I could feel my body and my life coming back to wholeness and joy almost immediately. This was the first step in reconnecting with my feminine wisdom, beauty, and power, and it was the beginning of a deep healing journey that has brought me here. When we get in touch with our bodies in a loving, intuitive, flowing way, we can access our greatest source of power, pleasure, and wisdom within. When I felt the benefits of the movement that was being created through me, I felt the impulse to share it with other women. So I did, and here I am! As a side note, my daughter is now 19 and incredibly confident, beautiful, and talented, and I am married to the man of my dreams! The rewards of honoring the feminine are infinite.
DailyOM: Can you tell us what "Shakti" is?
AB: You can find an endless amount of information about what Shakti is, but I find the simplest way to understand it is this: Shakti is feminine energy in motion. In other words, it is the feminine energy of creation that is experienced as moving through the universe, and in this case, through the body. Its origins come from Hinduism, and it has become a very universal way to speak about powerful feminine energy, especially in yogic terms.
DailyOM: You mention in the course that Shakti is like a serpent that spirals up the spine. Can you share more about this?
AB: Sometimes visualizations can help us to feel and move energy more effectively. The myths around how Shakti manifests in our world are many and varied, and one of them is as a serpent, called Shakti Kundalini, that lays dormant at the base of the spine until she is awoken and called forth to rise. What this really means, in my interpretation, is that we have latent energy in our bodies that requires our intention and awareness in order to move. Shakti, or feminine energy, is within all of us and lives in the pelvis, our center of creativity and sensuality. I can speak from personal experience that when we move our body in a certain way, like how we move in this course, the energy of Shakti is more effectively activated than say if we were on a stationary bike or went for a run. Linear movement is less effective than spiraling, circular movement. This is why belly dance is so powerful in this regard. The undulating, shimmying movement awakens Shakti, and she begins to spiral up the spine, unblocking energy, and offering us healing and vitality.
DailyOM: So, what does it mean to be a "Shakti Warrior" and how is healing related to embodying this persona?
AB: Being a Shakti Warrior means owning your feminine energy, your Shakti. The world is very much dominated by masculine energies: intellect, action, resistance, and competition. These are not bad things, they just need to be balanced out by more intuition, stillness, receptivity, and collaboration. In order to tip the scales back to a balance between feminine and masculine, we as women have the unique position of being in female bodies which are potent channels for feminine energy. Many of us who identify with femaleness are being called to amplify our inner feminine, and radiate it out into the world with the focus, intention, and compassion of a loving, peaceful warrior. In order to do this, we must heal our own inner trauma so that no part of our consciousness is cut off from this feminine energy. Trauma keeps parts of our consciousness in denial and darkness, often to protect us from the pain of that trauma, but until we are willing to bring everything to the surface and move it through and out, we can never be fully present. We can never fully embody the power that is available to us -- in this case, feminine power. So being a Shakti Warrior means committing to doing the hard work of healing and clearing, and then stepping fully into your radiance and power!
DailyOM: How is learning to love your body and eliminating negative self-talk part of the process of healing and embodying the Shakti Warrior?
AB: When we regard our body with negativity and criticism, we are seeing our body as something other than a pure expression of who we are. The body is the exact manifestation of our soul, like it or not, and it never, ever lies to us. What we see in the mirror can tell us everything we need to know about our internal being, and if we judge, criticize, and compare, we are missing the point. Our body is a magical, potent vessel that houses our eternal spirit. The way we look and how our body functions can be seen as something to silence and change, or it can be seen as a perfect opportunity to connect with ourselves on the deepest level possible. If we hate our body and think it should be different than it is, this is a wonderful opportunity to look at where, when, and how we separated from the body and stopped trusting it. Our body has one goal at all times, and that goal is to be in homeostasis and health. It will do anything it can to get into that state, even if it means getting sick, which is just another way it is trying to keep us from dying. When the body gets sick, overweight, or diseased, it is making an attempt to protect us from something toxic in the system, whether it be physical or emotional. If we can change our perspective and look at the body as a messenger that never lies, we will realize that we are in fact more powerful than we ever thought. The first step is to get our energy flowing, which is of course the goal of the lessons in this course. Once we get the energy flowing, we will be able to feel what we need to experience and express, and the path to healing will start to be revealed. We simply need to show up, commit to allowing our energy to move, and learn to see the body as the incredibly perfect vessel that it is. The rest will take care of itself. If we are willing.
