DailyOM: We would love to learn about the great benefits of this standing abs course.
Sarah: I love that this course gives so many benefits. It's short and sweet, to fit into anyone's schedule. (Let's be honest — it's easy to look for excuses, but when it's a shorter workout you really can't complain!) That you can achieve a stronger core is one of the main benefits of course; I'm all for movement and mobility, but a strong core can really help support you in day-to-day activities and help prevent injuries.
As an ex–professional dancer, something I pride myself on is having amazing posture. Did you know that core strength helps your posture? Also, increased stability and enhanced balance will definitely be experienced during the daily exercises, as I love to add challenge and balancing is always good for that and you need to find your core strength to be able to stand on one leg. So if you wobble when doing balancing exercises, people should be ready to focus on the mind-body connection in your abdominal muscles to help stay calm and balance like a pro.
Techniques like learning to connect mindfully to your abdominal muscles, even learning the different muscles in your whole midsection, are also benefits, as these can also contribute to a more defined waistline and improved mobility. Additionally performing the exercises standing engages multiple muscle groups simultaneously leading to overall functional fitness.
DailyOM: You're a big fan of short, concentrated workouts. How long is each daily session?
Sarah: Each day is 12 minutes long, which I felt is enough time to really get into it and work those abs and really challenge yourself but at the same time be easy to add into busy schedules. I feel like "I don't have time to work out" is something I hear often. That is why I like to prove how much you can achieve in a shorter time frame.
Also, remember that a standing workout requires more stability and engagement of the core than one that is lying down, so this can contribute to higher energy expenditure, therefore gaining more in a shorter time frame. It's a win-win!
DailyOM: What specific exercises and techniques will be covered in the seven days?
Sarah: I'm so excited for this course to be experienced, as you really do get a lot of fun exercises that keep you engaged and energized. You will get a lot of creatively styled knee lifts working the front abdominals and the obliques, frontal leg kicks, plié bend crunches with side-to-side oblique movement, balancing side leg lifts with upper body tilt, and more. There really is a lot of action and concentration within this whole course.
I always want to make sure you never get bored of a workout — if I get bored, I lose interest and that's when you don't feel or see results. Every day you will get three different exercises. There might be a few "pulses" added onto some moves, just to add that extra little "Sarah fire." I am really excited for you to delve into this course and find your inner strength. We've all got it — it's just about finding it.
DailyOM: Are there any requirements for equipment?
Sarah: Not at all! Which is a huge bonus, right? This course is designed so you can activate the muscles mindfully and without the need of equipment. This style really does help you focus even more on the area you are working, as you want to make sure you feel those abs.
Adding equipment into the course is a great option once you have completed the course the first time and you are looking to amp up the intensity even more; at that point, dumbbells, resistance bands, and even light ankle weights would be very good choices to advance to. I always like workouts that can be successful without equipment, so they can be done anytime, anywhere, like at the office, on vacation, etc., and this course is one of those! This is a really great foundation course for all fitness levels to get that midsection heavily focused on.
DailyOM: Thanks so much, Sarah! This really does sound like a win-win: a standing workout with no equipment that you can do anywhere in just 12 minutes! And as always Sarah brings her signature enthusiasm and motivation to every class. Until next time, be well.
