Interview With Jacqui Justice

DailyOM: What are some of the signs that our immune system needs boosting?

Jacqui Justice: There are actually quite a few important signs that our immune system may be weak that people should be aware of. There are obvious signs like getting frequent colds or infections and having a hard time bouncing back from them. It is not unusual to get two to three mild colds per year, but they should only last about a week at most. If a person is getting sick more often and then has a hard time recovering, that's a pretty clear sign that their immune system is suppressed and is in need of some attention. Then there are less obvious signs that our immune system may need some boosting, like feeling tired all the time, chronic uncontrolled stress, digestive troubles, slow wound healing, and skin issues, such as cracked lips, cold sores, and eczema. All of these are subtle signs that we may not connect with having a weak immune system. When we take steps to boost our immune system, our body rewards us with protection from all of these issues.

DailyOM: Tell us about the kinds of dietary and lifestyle changes you teach in this course?

JJ: I do not think very many people are even aware of the fact that just by tweaking our diets and lifestyles a bit, we can substantially strengthen our immune systems, so that is a big focus in this course. This is very empowering information, because it means our wellness is really in our own hands. It is a well-known fact that an alkaline pH diet is more health promoting than an acidic pH diet, so this course is focused on shifting our diets in the alkaline direction. This includes getting more veggies in our diets, as well as combining alkaline-rich foods with healthy acid-forming foods to create a neutral balance. This is not difficult and can actually be as simple as having a green salad with vegan or animal protein. In addition, just as our diets can be tweaked to improve our immunity, so can our lifestyles. Being overweight, chronically stressed, sedentary, having poor sleep habits, sitting too long, and even being a shallow breather can all result in depleting our immune system. Shifting from these immune-depleting habits and behaviors to more immune-strengthening behaviors is a big focus, as both dietary and lifestyle factors are equally important in building a strong immune system.

DailyOM: You teach the important role exercise plays in boosting our immune system. Tell us more about why this is essential.

JJ: It is no surprise that exercise contributes to our general health and well-being, but its immune-boosting effects are lesser known. When we exercise appropriately -- meaning not too little and not too much -- we promote good circulation which is essential to our immunity. Exercise helps the white blood cells and antibodies that fight infection circulate more rapidly, so they can help detect and destroy infectious agents earlier and keep us from getting sick. Exercise also helps to keep us well by decreasing the release of cortisol (our stress hormone) and promoting the release of endorphins (our happy hormones). We just have to exercise appropriately. Over-exercising acts as a stressor in our bodies which can result in lowering our immunity. One sign that you may be exercising more than your body can handle is if you notice a drop in energy after exercise. Exercise, if you are doing it right, should energize you, not exhaust you. If you are experiencing the loss of energy, you are putting too much stress on your body, especially your adrenal glands, and decreasing your immunity in the process.

DailyOM: Changing eating and lifestyle habits can often be challenging for people, so how do you help students make these kinds of changes and sustain them?

JJ: Changing our eating and lifestyle habits is not something that comes easily for most people. It really comes down to the benefits. A person has to pretty quickly see that the benefits they are receiving from making the change outweigh the pain, so to speak, of changing. This course is designed in a way that the student will start seeing important positive benefits in the first few days. Some of these benefits include more energy, better sleep, improved digestion, and improved mood. In addition, I encourage the students to journal their experience in this course so that they can see the progress they are making and the effect it is having on them. This exercise helps to show them the positive effect the changes are making in their lives and helps to motivate them to continue. When you feel good as a result of a change you made, that is motivation enough to sustain the changes. Also of importance is that everyone is different when it comes to how much they are willing to change, and at what pace they are willing to go. I always recommend that students go at a pace that is comfortable for them, while still making steady progress. As long as they stick with it, they will get to their goal -- it just may take a little longer. This approach helps to alleviate the stress that making too many changes too quickly usually causes. My philosophy is that achieving optimal wellness is not a race, it's a journey that lasts a lifetime.

DailyOM: Besides improving our immune system, are there any other benefits that come from taking this course?
