January 22, 2016 Qigong Meditations Ken Cohen 2005 Ken Cohen is one of the key figures that introduced qigong meditation (Taoist inner-healing exercises) to western medical practice. A former collaborator of his mentor Alan Watts, he's spent 40 years as a practitioner and teacher of tai chi and qigong meditation. For Qigong Meditations, Cohen keeps things simple, lively, and accessible to western ears as he goes about grounding the practice within the context of general meditations and breathing exercises. He then expands with a series of creative visualizations that enable the mind to send in healing energy to all areas of the brain, body, and spirit. These include a "five-colored light meditation" and meditations for mind-cleaning, body-healing, and inner tranquility. Opening on the gong and the wooden fish (the yin, the cool and lunar), the gong represents the yang: "When these flows are blocked or damaged, then like a screen that has become blocked, it breeds disease. Doctors now know that electrical currents are what controls the immune system," declares Cohen. "The purpose of yoga is so that the energy can move...unhindered." This mastering of life-force energy has been the foundation of eastern medicine, and Cohen gives us a few exercises to demonstrate its accuracy: "Allow yourself to be an open window of awareness...allowing thoughts to come and go." He urges that we practice concentration but "not concentration on any one particular thing, but just watching the flow of thoughts, without rejecting the thoughts that come into your mind, nor prolonging them." For "Closing Chant," Cohen takes us through the meaning of each part of the chant and translates the original text into English. "The division between inside and outside is the essential illusion." He sings the chant then closes on a mournful Zen flute. It's a succinct, life-changing CD and a perfect introduction to qigong from a man who's been patiently introducing this marvelous path to the west for decades. Cohen makes Qigong Meditations an essential learning tool for when you're ready to start living on a higher plane, aware of the light and beauty within, and able to access your breath's power to activate and heal every aspect of your body, mind, and soul.
