How to Quiet the Mind

How to Quiet the Mind

By

The following is an excerpt from the "How to Quiet the Mind" on-line course. If you would like to enroll in the course, click here.

The mind is a wonderful tool for thinking, but it has a dark side. There is an aspect of the mind that is not useful but pretends to be useful, which is called the egoic mind. It is the aspect of our mind that chats with us as we move about our day. It is the "voice in our head," as Eckhart Tolle calls it. Much of the time, this voice seems like our own thoughts and our own voice, and we often express these thoughts (e.g., "I love doing that!" "I can't wait until tomorrow." "I wonder what will happen"). At other times, this voice is like the voice of a parent or other authority figure or a friend (e.g., "You should try harder." "Don't forget to take your vitamins." "Wouldn't it be fun to try that!"). It may even seem evil or mean (e.g., "You never do anything right. You're worthless. You might as well give up"). We tend to take this voice seriously--we believe it, agree with it, and don't question it. We believe it because we are programmed, or wired, to believe our own thoughts, regardless of whether they are true and helpful or not.

Not only do we believe these thoughts, but we believe they are "ours." We identify with them--we feel they reflect who we are. We don't tend to question our own thoughts, although we readily question other people's thoughts, especially if those thoughts are different from ours. But when we stop and examine what this mental voice is saying, we discover a lot of contradictory advice, misinformation, prejudices, judgments, and other negativity. This mental voice is often unkind, belittling, fearful, self-doubting, judgmental, complaining, confused, and unhelpful.

It turns out that the voice in our head is not a very good guide to life, and yet we tend to accept what it says and do what it suggests. This voice, in fact, is the cause of human suffering. It fights life, rails against it, and is discontent and afraid. It is the voice of the false self--the ego--not the true self. Without these thoughts, we would live in peace within ourselves and in harmony with others. But you already know this, don't you?

The programming to pay attention to and believe this aspect of the mind is very strong, and it takes not only seeing the truth about it, but also a practice, as in meditation, of not giving our attention to this mental voice before we gain enough distance from it to experience freedom and the joy and peace of our true self, or Essence.

Cancer Horoscope: Selfless Support

Selfless Support

May 6, 2017

You could be of use to your loved ones today which may be because you are in a kindhearted and generous mood. Maybe because you are able to provide support to someone you care about in a time of need, you might feel that your gifts are being put to their best use. Learning to give of yourself without expecting anything in return could make the love and care you share all the more worthwhile to the people who receive it. Rather than thinking of your help as something that is indispensable today , you might instead consider your encouragement as a natural extension of the interconnected nature that all of us share. If you can see yourself as being part of a whole instead of a distinct entity, you may come to realize that your support is actually an extension of being a member of the community as a whole.

Real generosity comes from a place of sincere intention. When others need us we can easily get caught up in the idea that our help is vital to their wellbeing. Looking at this another way, however, allows us to recognize that by doing things for other people we are in fact simply being, that is, we are acting upon that which is simply part of our human nature. Giving then takes on another meaning – not just helping others but finding deeper ways to connect with them. Encouraging your loved ones selflessly will make the support you give today so much more meaningful and worthwhile.

Coming Full Circle

Coming Full Circle

by Madisyn Taylor

When we come full circle there is the feeling that we have come to a familiar place but we are somehow different.

Life is a circular journey through our issues and processes, and this is why things that are technically new often seem very familiar. It is also why, whenever we work to release a habit, change a pattern, or overcome a fear, we often encounter that issue one last time, even after we thought we had conquered it. Often, when this happens, we feel defeated or frustrated that after all our hard work we are still dealing with the same problem. However, the reappearance of a pattern, habit, or fear, is often a sign that we have come full circle, and that if we can maintain our resolve through one last test, we will achieve a new level of mastery in our lives.

When we come full circle, there is often the feeling that we have arrived in a familiar place, but that we ourselves are somehow different. We know that we can handle challenges that seemed insurmountable when we began our journey, and there is the feeling that we might be ready to take on a new problem, or some new aspect of the old problem. We feel empowered and courageous to have taken on the challenge of stopping a pattern, releasing a habit, or overcoming a fear, and to have succeeded. At times like these, we deserve a moment of rest and self-congratulation before we move on to the next challenge.

Coming full circle is like stepping into a clearing where, for a moment, we can see where we came from and where we are standing at the same time. Remembering that we will be tested again is important, but it's also important to pause and take a look at the ground we've covered, honoring our courage, our persistence, and our achievement. Then we can begin the next leg of our circular journey with a fuller understanding of where we are coming from.

Way of Story Writing Course

by Catherine Ann Jones

"We've become lopsided living only in our heads. Writing, in order to serve the soul, must integrate outer craft with the inner world of intuition and feeling." Our world is made up of stories. If you don't like the one you're in, write a better one. Like your Soul, the soul of story is a combination of craft and magic, a uniting of head and heart. We live in a world of too much separation and pain, which, for many writers, can be ended by illuminating the oneness of life, through creating powerful characters that live in our individual and collective psyche, awaiting release. Writing is a powerful tool of self-exploration. Every story has a sacred dimension not because of gods but because a man or woman's sense of self and her world is created through them. These stories orient the life of a people through time, establishing the reality of their world. Thus, meaning and purpose are given to people's lives. Without story, we do not exist. The Way of Story is how we discover who we are.

Cancer Horoscope: Consciously Choose Your Words

Consciously Choose Your Words

May 5, 2017

When speaking to others today you may be more aware of the impact of your words, and this may make you much more patient, gentle and kindhearted in your interactions. Becoming mindful of the ways in which your message is communicated could open you up to a new understanding of the strength behind your words. Perhaps this would be a good time to practice choosing your words wisely by taking a few minutes to think about what you have to say before saying it, particularly in delicate or sensitive situations. Before you speak, you can, for example, take a deep breath and ask the universe what would be the best way to handle this situation. The act of slowing down, deliberating and getting in touch with the universe, you may realize, can make your communications so much more meaningful, comforting and powerful.

Speaking with awareness and consciously allows us to pick words that will make others feel better about their situation and themselves. When we pay attention to what we say and hat way we say it, we are using the power of our speech to give comfort to another person. In essence, each one of our words becomes a small healer – carrying the message from our heart and the universe that everything will work out for the best, and using this awareness mindfully will bring a new dimension to the nature of our everyday interactions. Letting your words come from within will help you speak with compassion and a greater sensitivity to the feelings of others today.
