Becoming a Better Person

Becoming a Better Person

by Madisyn Taylor

We understand that we want to be better but have no clear definition of what better means and that is part of the process.

At some point in our lives, many of us find ourselves overcome with the desire to become better people. While we are all uniquely capable of navigating this world, we may nonetheless feel driven to grow, expand, and change. This innate need for personal expansion can lead us down many paths as we develop within the context of our individual lives. Yet the initial steps that can put us on the road to evolution are not always clear. We understand that we want to be better but have no clear definition of "better." To ease this often frustrating uncertainty, we can take small steps, keeping our own concept of growth in mind rather than allowing others to direct the course of our journey. And we should accept that change won't happen overnight--we may not recognize the transformations taking place within us at first.

Becoming a better person in your own eyes is a whole-life project, and thus you should focus your step-by-step efforts on multiple areas of your existence. Since you likely know innately which qualities you consider good, growing as an individual is simply a matter of making an effort to do good whenever possible. Respect should be a key element of your efforts. When you acknowledge that all people are deserving of compassion, consideration, and dignity, you are naturally more apt to treat them in the manner you yourself wish to be treated. You will intuitively become a more active listener, universally helpful, and truthful. Going the extra mile in all you do can also facilitate evolution. Approaching your everyday duties with an upbeat attitude and positive expectations can help you make the world a brighter, more cheerful place. Finally, coming to terms with your values and then abiding by them will enable you to introduce a new degree of integrity and dignity into your l! ife.

As you endeavor to develop yourself further, you can take pride not only in your successes, but also in the fact that you are cultivating consciousness within yourself through your choices, actions, and behaviors. While you may never feel you have reached the pinnacles of awareness you hope to achieve, you can make the most of this creative process of transformation. Becoming a better person is your choice and is a natural progression in your journey of self-awareness.

Cancer Horoscope: Moved by Wonder

Moved by Wonder

January 2, 2017

A profound sense of wonderment can suffuse your thoughts as you roam about your world today. What once seemed commonplace and dull will likely now capture your interest and stimulate your senses. You may recognize these feelings of awe as being similar to those you experienced in childhood when confronted with breathtaking sights, sounds, and scents for the very first time. Making the most of this new innocence of perspective can be as simple as analyzing it thoroughly to determine why it arose and how you can retain it. If you feel it wavering today, try making an effort to see the beauty in everything you see around you, from nature's glories to humankind's ingenuity.

The world can be a truly beautiful and wondrous place when we allow ourselves to summon up the sense of awe we felt as children when looking at the world through innocent eyes. It is entirely possible to cast off the jaded and cynical attitudes that prevent one from perceiving life's simple mysteries, but we must consciously and willingly do so. As our perspective changes from one of worldliness to one of purity, our minds are opened to the breathtaking splendor that exists all around us. This change in vantage point transforms us, and while we may feel that the world has become new again it is really our renewed appreciation for the grandeur of our surroundings that is positively influencing our experience. As you recapture the wonder of your youth today, you will realize that the world has always been as beautiful as it is right now.

Happy New Year New You!

Happy New Year New You!

by Madisyn Taylor

Ready for a fresh start, letting go of the old and trying something new? Start the new year right with one of our courses!

Dear Friends,

Here we are again meeting in this space on the first day of a new year. If you are like most people I know, there is a feeling of relief as we shed and release 2016. Saying last year was difficult would be an understatement for many of you. Personally, I watched so many friends walk through pain and adversity. I remember writing this newsletter last year at this time and felt that 2016 would be a great year of change--of course I had no idea at the time what that meant. Although these experiences are often our greatest teachers, they still remain painful nonetheless.

Moving into this year, we find ourselves in transition as individuals and as humans living on the planet together. One of the best ways to help the whole is to start with yourself. Becoming the strongest and most fully awakened version of yourself will greatly help heal our collective wounds. Please don't underestimate the power of working on yourself to help shift humanity--it is important work. You may recall many DailyOM stories I have written about this very issue.

Many of you know that I am an empath, I feel the emotions of other people both on an individual level and a global level. Because of this, January 1 is often one of my best days of the year because so many people are happy to shed the old and welcome the new. There is renewed excitement about starting a new routine or program and a feeling of creative energy is in the air. This energy is something we can all take advantage of to help us become the best version of ourselves.

If you want to start the new year with a renewed sense of purpose, here are five online courses I have handpicked that will help you on your way. I've had the great honor to meet and be friends with almost all of these course authors, and each one has been so passionate about bringing you the best course they can with quality work.

21-Day Yoga Shred by Sadie Nardini. This is a three-week course where you will receive a new lesson each day (21 lessons). In this course she will teach you a fast-acting and empowering cleanse and yoga practice. Receive up to three videos daily, 21 delicious and nourishing recipes, and success-building inspirations. A Year to Clear What Is Holding You Back! by Stephanie Bennet. This 365-day course is organized into 52 weekly segments and is one of our top-selling courses. Some examples of weekly themes are moving stuck energy, shining the light on invisible clutter, breaking the chain of pain, and more. more info

21-Day Total Goddess Workout by Jannine Murray. In this online course you will receive a new lesson each day for 22 days. Included are 30-minute workouts, meal plans, affirmations and wisdom, journaling exercises, and so much more. The Best Year of Your Life by Debbie Ford. This is a 52-week course where Debbie will teach you the key to happiness and loving yourself through the power of choice, stopping self-sabotage, examining your shadow, forgiving yourself, and more. Debbie has put together a beautiful course to truly heal your mind, body, and spirit. more info

A Year of Rumi by Andrew Harvey. In this 365-day course you will receive a hand-selected poem by the amazing scholar Andrew Harvey. He is a brilliant translator of Rumi and a wonderful human being in his own right. Starting your day with a quote from Rumi is a beautiful gift for yourself. (Note, the 365 days start when you sign up, not only on January 1.) more info

Thank you, dear readers, for another year of inviting me into your life. I am constantly amazed by you and the stories you share with me. I wish you so much love, peace, and strength for this year and all years.

Madisyn Taylor

Cancer Horoscope: Honoring Yourself

Honoring Yourself

January 1, 2017

Your sense of self may be well-established today, leading you to unconsciously think and act with more grace and poise than usual. Even if you typically shy away from personal or professional situations in which others will challenge your ideas, you may find yourself eagerly anticipating opportunities to interact with people in positions of power. You may likewise be called upon to work closely with demanding or overbearing individuals. Since you are in all probability feeling both confidant and accomplished, you may be surprised to discover that you stand firm when your beliefs or values are questioned. Today may be the day you fully realize your personal power and let go of the fear that has held you back in the past.

Our levels of confidence remain steady when we consistently honor ourselves by standing by our beliefs and values when in the company of individuals who have divergent opinions. Many people allow the intimidation they feel when in the company of people they deem powerful to paralyze them and keep them from expressing themselves sincerely. Yet we seldom feel self-assured when we hide our true natures. It is only when we allow ourselves to think and speak freely that we feel grounded in our unique philosophies and confident enough to stand by our views. By simply being ourselves, we establish ourselves as strong and capable individuals. When you strive to embody your principles at all times today, you will feel comfortable articulating your thoughts in all manner of groups.
