Sometimes when we feel sore or achy, we assume it must be our muscles crying out for rest. But there’s something else quietly working behind the scenes that might be asking for our attention: fascia. Fascia is a web of fibrous connective tissue that wraps around every muscle, joint, and organ — like a gentle, supportive sweater holding everything in place.
But just like any part of us, fascia can become tight or stuck — especially when we’re holding on to stress or tension. That’s when those familiar aches, stiffness, or nagging pains might show up. The wonderful thing is, once we begin to care for our fascia with mindful movement, our body starts to relax. We feel better, and we move with greater ease.
To start, try this simple exercise: Sit tall in a chair with your feet flat on the floor and your knees bent at 90 degrees. Rest your hands on your thighs. Straighten one leg out in front of you, keeping your heel on the ground and your toes pointing up. As you straighten your leg, gently lift your chin (looking slightly upward). Then slowly bend your leg back to the starting position, and tuck your chin slightly toward your chest. Repeat this smooth motion 8–10 times on each leg, moving with your breath. This “flossing” action helps glide the fascia and nerves together — encouraging better mobility, circulation, and tension relief without forcing a stretch.
