DailyOM: Why should someone do a juice detox? How does it benefit your body?

Jenny Ross: A juice detox is a quick and effective way to reset your body's optimal performance factors. If you wish to balance your metabolism, improve your mental focus, ward off cravings, detoxify your vital organs, or simply take a "break" from an eating pattern that doesn't serve you, juice cleansing can be a gentle yet powerful tool. When juice cleansing, participants often report increased energy, decreased hunger for unhealthy foods, improved clarity, and you may notice an enhanced glow to your overall appearance due to the infusion of beneficial vitamins, minerals, and other phyto-nutrients. This juicing course is a powerful choice for resetting your body. You can expect to reduce inflammation, reset your digestion, improve your body's absorption of nutrients, improve the function of your vital organs, support the development of healthy hair, skin, and nails -- and allow your body a break, to replenish itself from the inside out.

DailyOM: Tell us about the kinds of juices you include in your course. Will they offer enough variety and taste for students?

JR: Each day of this program you are given a guide for 5 fresh raw beverages, such as the Grapefruit Juice Cleanser, Power Green Juice, and Rainbow Juice. These juices act as a base that you can then combine with other healthy, fresh, and delicious ingredients. Options are an important part of each individual's juicing journey, so this course was designed to give you different opportunities and recipes to play with, using the 5 juice beverages in order to make them suit your unique taste while using the resources that are easiest for you to find. This means LOTS of great variety! For example, in one lesson you will learn about the benefits of green juices and how to create delicious combinations based on the Power Green Juice, such as adding ginger to make the warming Gingerly Green or adding pineapple to make the yummy Golden Green Juice.

DailyOM: For those who are new to juicing, people sometimes worry about detox symptoms. What can students expect and what kinds of tips do you offer to help them?

JR: During the initial 3 days of any juicing or clean eating program, it is common to experience different symptoms of detox from removing inflammatory foods and beverages from your body. For example, a chemical dependency to coffee will take 2-4 days to break the cycle. Overall, you are a lot better off, but don't worry if you experience any of the following: light headache, fatigue, imbalanced energy, clumsy movements, mood swings, or just a general sense of being "off." I recommend during these first 3 days to get extra rest, drink lots of water to flush out the toxins, and enjoy some light movement for better circulation. If you are a regular coffee drinker, switch to green tea during this course to help minimize the detox symptoms and help transition you away from coffee. Within the first few days, if not hours, these symptoms will dissipate, and you will be ready to receive some of the bigger benefits of making this commitment to juicing! However, if after 3 days and you are still feeling off, you can modify the program to suit your needs, and I offer suggestions in the course of how to do this with ease while still experiencing many of the benefits this course has to offer.

DailyOM: After the 7 days of juicing, you offer guidance for days 8-10. Why are the "post-detox" days important?

JR: Your body will still be in detox mode as you finish out the week, and your digestive tract has been resting, allowing the rest of your body to eliminate in a deeper way. On days 8-10 you will want to gradually restart your digestive tract and take advantage of your body's natural ability to continue your detox into the following week for the most peaceful step into a clean eating program post cleanse. Your body will continue to cleanse for up to 2 weeks following your juicing program. It is very important that during those post-detox days that you enjoy healthy foods that are free from food additives and as natural as possible. In the bonus materials at the end of the course, I have included recipes for delicious options. You will be enjoying foods like avocado, salads, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and more juice. Beginning with the third day after resetting your system, you will begin adding in denser proteins and other healthy foods relative to your own lifestyle preferences.

DailyOM: Beyond the physical benefits, does a juicing detox benefit other aspects of your well-being like your mind and emotions?

JR: Absolutely! When we do a juice detox, we are recalibrating every part of our being. Emotionally you might find yourself feeling a little bit vulnerable as you release emotions that have been buried. It is natural for those thoughts or energies to release -- which leads to a renewed sense of passion and freedom! Mentally you may notice you are more acute as blood flow to the brain is increased while on a juice detox. Many participants feel like they discover the opportunity to reconnect to parts of themselves they had forgotten about in day-to-day life. Juice cleansing is a natural time to reflect and set new -- or renew -- goals for the future. This is why I recommend that during this course you accompany your juicing journey with a daily practice of journaling about your juicing experience and your feelings and observations. This is a great time to build your self-awareness. Along with journaling, I suggest having a daily gratitude practice to keep yourself motivated and positive, as well as a practice of being accountable by sharing what you are doing with a trusted friend or mentor. These practices will deepen your juicing journey and the benefits you experience.
