Interview With Emily Spurling

DailyOM: What inspired you to create this course?

Emily Spurling: The driving force behind creating this course was watching my beloved husband David struggle with sleeplessness and experiencing the impact it had on the rest of his life. When David slept well, he was funny, charismatic, witty, energetic, and super fit. So I felt particularly helpless watching every part of David's life become negatively impacted when he began having difficulty sleeping. It snowballed from being anxious and easily agitated to being tired, unmotivated, and generally unwell. Once I delved into researching the topic of sleep, it became apparent how widespread this problem is. With two-thirds of the world's developed nations dealing with sleep deprivation, I felt compelled to help on a global scale. I could see a tornado of sleeplessness had stirred up around my husband, and discovering that this same turmoil was experienced by the majority of the world, it dawned upon me: solving the sleeplessness epidemic can change the world! Sleep is grossly undervalued, and it is a little-known fact that getting enough sleep is the single most important thing we can do for our health, along with diet and exercise. Unfortunately, sleep has become less of a priority for some in this modern age, where being tired, stressed, and busy can be seen as a sign of being valuable and even successful.

DailyOM: What techniques do you share with the students to help them achieve sufficient sleep?

ES: There is no one-size-fits-all solution to the sleeplessness epidemic, which is why this course guides students through all the variables that may be impacting their ability to get enough sleep. These include diet, exercise, routine, gut health, and the ability to manage stress. I have drawn on the most up-to-date scientific research from the West, and paired it with ancient Eastern techniques, to deliver a comprehensive and holistic course. Each day the student receives an informative and interesting written lesson with accompanying journal questions to help them determine the relevance of the lesson to their lives. Homework activities guide the student to make achievable changes to their daily routine that will culminate in a huge shift by the end of the course. Each lesson also includes a short video where I offer a variety of breathing techniques, simple exercises, and reassurance from me, a friend along the journey. The icing on the cake in this course are the fourteen 60-minute-long meditations that are designed to be done in bed before you go to sleep.

DailyOM: What is your area of expertise?

ES: I am a health coach, yoga instructor, and mindfulness expert. For the last decade, I have been working with people to help them achieve a healthy body and mind. Regardless of what I am treating, whether it be physical pain, anxiety, or obesity, the only way to get lasting results is to look at the whole person: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Each of us is like an intricate tapestry that has been created not only by our genetics, but also by every thought, action, feeling, and experience we have ever had. It is my job to help people step back and truly see every aspect of their tapestry from a non-judgmental perspective, and empower them to consciously weave the threads and create the life that they want. Only then can true health and healing occur, so that life can become peaceful and effortless.

DailyOM: What are the benefits of the daily 60-minute meditations you offer throughout the course?

ES: When I was helping my husband to find sleep meditations online, it was my experience that despite there being plenty of them, none seemed to share any practical techniques that empowered the listener to fall asleep on their own. Rather, the meditations I came across were similar to an audiobook, a sort of entertainment or way to pass the time while the listener was in limbo between being awake and asleep. I found these types of meditations would contribute to wakefulness rather than act as a sleep aid. Throughout this course, students are treated to a catalogue of meditations containing the most effective physical relaxation techniques known. The meditations I have created combine scientifically proven breathing and relaxation techniques, some dreamy visualizations, then silence, so the listener can practice the technique I have just shared on their own and gain their own intuitive insights. To give you specific examples, in one of the meditations I share a 60-minute Yoga Nidra practice which hails from the ancient Indian healing science of Ayurveda. It is thought to be the deepest form of rest while being awake, and it is being used today by the military to help those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), because the practice offers a reprieve from their thoughts. In another meditation, I reveal a military technique for falling asleep in under 2 minutes which was developed in World War 2 so that stressed-out fighter pilots would be able to get rest in order to be able to perform their duties with less errors. In some of the meditations, the listener will take a journey deep within their subconscious mind to heal any emotional blockages that may be creating inner turmoil and preventing sleep. I also teach ancient breathing exercises which have stood the test of time and have had their legitimacy confirmed by modern science. These exercises will become a beloved part of the students' evening routine as their potency becomes felt.

DailyOM: What will the students take away from this course?

ES: Upon completion, the student will be empowered with the knowledge and practical tools to improve their sleep. The effect that a good night's sleep has on a person's physical, mental, and emotional state is astronomical. When sleep is achieved, the result is improved relationships and a longer, happier, and more fulfilling life. My intention is to provide the student with a full toolbox of sleep and relaxation techniques they can access anytime. This course comes with a warning though: it does require consistent effort from the student beyond the completion of this 14-day journey with me. I hope to inspire the student to take a step back from their lives and take stock of what is working and what isn't. A simple change of perspective and some clever guidance can reveal the hidden solution. There is no magic spell that can fix the global sleeplessness problem, but I strongly believe that this course contains all the information necessary to empower every individual to reclaim their ability to sleep well and live their best life.

DailyOM: What would you say to the skeptics who believe there is no end to their sleepless nights?

ES: I would say, if you do not change anything, nothing will change. I have met so many people who have resigned themselves to living in a less than optimal state or alternatively are seeking quick fixes. This course is for those who are truly ready for real, lasting change and will follow the clearly outlined steps within this course to feel, live, and sleep better.
