Such variations in mood might be the result of your following the various thoughts that pop into your mind -- listening to the different ideas that come and go and wanting to hold onto all of them. Perhaps you can use counting meditation to help you focus your mind on one thing at a time today. Should you notice that your thoughts begin to wander and that this negatively affects how you feel, try closing your eyes and slowly counting each breath you take from one to ten. Just getting yourself to bring your mind to one point of focus in this way could not only soothe the mood swings you have but it can also make you more aware of the overall effect your thoughts have on you. Having a specific thing to concentrate on allows us to bring our minds, and ultimately our emotions into check. When our thoughts start racing we can get all too caught up in the messages they are sending to us -- often things that aren't really relevant to our present situation -- which in turn affects how we feel. Learning to quiet our minds enables us to simply be with the thoughts, letting them ebb and flow around us without making them our own.
