Even if you start to feel obligated to take on more than you reasonably can, you can remind yourself that no one will benefit from your help or presence unless you are in a positive state of mind. As you listen to your needs, you might find that you are able to cope with the things on your plate with a greater sense of ease and peace of mind.
Learning to listen to our needs first makes it easier for us to take on only what we can, and not what we feel we have to out of a sense of duty. When we overextend ourselves, we tax ourselves needlessly. While saying 'no' to others is difficult, it will ultimately be more challenging if we over-tax ourselves, for the energy we put into getting everything done only takes energy away from enjoying and cherishing each moment as it comes.
