Your idealism may have a dramatic effect on your relationships today as you unconsciously ascribe thoughts, feelings, and preferences to your loved ones. A romantic mood can cause you to romanticize your relationships in your mind's eye by projecting your emotional expectations onto the people you care about. Should they fail to live up to these expectations, you'll likely feel frustrated and disappointed. However, you may be unintentionally viewing people through unrealistic rose-colored glasses. Consider that the best way to appreciate your loved ones may involve seeing them as vulnerable, imperfect beings. Though you may want nothing more than to see the best in others today, recognizing and acknowledging that your loved ones are only human may help you grow closer.
Appreciating our loved ones for the people they are enables us to discover new levels of intimacy that embrace vulnerability and embody acceptance. When we see only our own romanticized images of our loved ones, we deny ourselves the wonderful opportunity to relate to the people we care about as whole, complex individuals. There is no need to hide pieces of oneself or pretend others have no faults when openness and honesty have been established as precedents. It is only when we divest ourselves of preconceptions and open our eyes to the fact that all people espouse virtues as well as vices that we can truly experience the joy of uninhibited interpersonal interactions. When you love those you care about for who they are today, you can adore the whole individual.
