Interview With Alex HortonDailyOM: Despite the fact that Pilates has gained a lot of popularity and is a highly recommended form of exercise, many people are hesitant to try it. Why do you think that is?
Alex Horton: I think a lot of people perceive Pilates as an exercise form aimed at those who are very fit and incredibly flexible. The reason for this is that Pilates was developed by a dancer who trained professional ballerinas. In the past, it was often associated with dancers, but it has since moved beyond the dance studio to gyms, group fitness classes, and people's homes. The key aspects of Pilates that makes it attractive to dancers (the development of long and lean muscles, the building of deep stabilizing muscles, the promotion of good posture) are exactly what many of us are looking for in exercise.
Pilates can be accessed at a range of different levels and the exercises can be modified to cater to individual needs, including injuries. In my course, I ensure that the exercises are clearly explained and easily adapted in order to make them accessible to all students, regardless of where they are starting from. I want students to know that Pilates really is for anyone!
DailyOM: In your course, you begin by talking about the principles of Pilates. What are the principles and why are they important to understand before beginning Pilates?
AH: The principles that underpin Pilates are alignment, breathing, and core engagement. These principles are integral to each and every Pilates exercise. When focusing on alignment, we think about the way the head, shoulders, spine, hips, knees, and ankles relate to one another. A well-aligned body is a well-supported body. In Pilates, we also perform a specific breathing pattern. The lateral breath helps to aid movement and muscle activation during exercise. The final key principle in Pilates is core engagement. In combination with the breath, you learn how to engage the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles.
The core engagement not only allows your body to move safely during exertion, but it also helps you develop strong, well-balanced muscles. It might seem like a lot to think about and remember when you are new to Pilates, but don't worry; I frequently remind and reteach these concepts throughout the lessons. What I love about these principles is how practical and applicable they are to other forms of exercise and other daily movements. My goal is for students to be able to use Pilates principles as a helpful reference when trying new sports, forms of exercise, fitness challenges, and leisure activities.
DailyOM: In many of your lessons you mention the mind-muscle connection. Can you explain what that means?
AH: Developing a mind-muscle connection involves consciously and deliberately focusing on the muscle you want to work and contracting it during exercise. In doing so, you'll be more able to recruit muscle fiber and effectively activate the muscle. Throughout the lessons, I make a point of reminding students where they should be "feeling it." This allows them to make adjustments where needed. Being able to identify where the work is happening and how to modify movements to fire the correct muscles is a skill that quite often needs to be explicitly taught. This is why taking a beginner's course in Pilates is so important. The more confident and proficient you become with the exercises, the more you'll really be able to zero in on those specific muscle groups. During the course, you'll gain the confidence and understanding you need to really get the results you are looking for when targeting different areas of the body.
DailyOM: What can students expect from the homework tasks?
AH: My primary goal when creating homework tasks was to make them as manageable, enjoyable, and practical as possible. Most of the tasks involve incorporating elements of Pilates into daily life. The habits you pick up in Pilates and the benefits you gain from those habits can be far reaching both on and off the mat. The homework tasks include things like little postural check-ins throughout the day.
Whether you are washing dishes, driving a car, bending down to pick up your child, or going for a walk or run, there are changes you can make to improve your movement patterns and better support your frame. It is important to know that the homework tasks are not time-consuming or meant to be strenuous or tedious. They are designed to help you transfer the benefits of Pilates into your everyday life. Our daily mat practices are improved through the implementation of Pilates principles throughout your day, and equally, your day-to-day movement patterns are supported and improved through your practice. Win-win!
DailyOM: What do you hope your students will gain from this course?
AH: Above all, a love for Pilates! It really is an amazing, life-changing form of exercise. I have introduced a lot of people to Pilates over the years, and the response from those who have practiced consistently has always been overwhelmingly positive. When you get to know the basics well, there is really no limit to where Pilates can take you on your fitness journey. Increased spinal flexibility; well-developed, balanced strength; and improved body awareness and movement patterns are just a few of the countless benefits students gain from the course. I hope that this course will spark the desire and enable students to continue to progress in their practice. I want students to experience life with healthy posture, a strong core, and the incredible feeling of moving with confidence and ease.
DailyOM: Tell us how you laid out the course and lessons?
AH: This course has been laid out in a way that allows participants to gradually build up skill, strength, and understanding over time. Rather than rushing through all of the classic Pilates exercises, students get a chance to review and refine previously taught exercises. There are opportunities to build on these when students feel ready to do so. The course begins with an in-depth introduction to the principles of Pilates, during which students can really get a feel for the alignment of their body, the breathing pattern, and the essential core engagement during each exercise. Sessions are clear and concise. Each lesson has a clear focus and a specific area of the body is targeted. The rotation of targeted body areas allows for mind-muscle connection and necessary muscle group rest. Over the course of 14 days, students learn, review, and extend Pilates exercises in a way that's safe, effective, manageable, and motivating!
DailyOM: What got you interested in Pilates?
AH: When I was younger, I played a lot of sports. I was also really into running. The high impact of the exercises I was doing resulted in a knee injury. I wasn't able to run and didn't always have the time to commit to team sports' schedules. I wanted to do something that would not only strengthen my knee, but also would condition my whole body in a low-impact way. I took a couple of group Pilates classes at a local gym and started doing videos at home. I immediately started noticing results. I felt stronger and more flexible than I had in years. I also noticed that I was moving a lot more effectively when I did play sports. I felt so much more stable and controlled in my movements. My knee hasn't bothered me since starting Pilates, and I am now able to run when I please. I have not experienced any other sport or exercise-related injury since. When I sit, stand, walk, climb, hike, swim, etc., I feel strong, able, and pain free. It's a wonderful feeling and I attribute the high level of strength and mobility I have to Pilates. I truly believe I'll be practicing Pilates well into my nineties!
