Stoking The Fire Within

A warrior perseveres in the face of adversity, stands up for their beliefs, and speaks in the service of those who cannot.


There are certain personality archetypes that we all carry within us, such as the inner child, the lover, and the mother. Some of these archetypes present themselves strongly, while others lay fallow. For example, there is an inner warrior in each one of us, but in some of us this warrior is underdeveloped to the point that we are unable to stand up for ourselves, even when necessary. There can be many reasons for this. We may have grown up with a parent whose warrior aspect was overdeveloped, and we responded by repressing ours completely. On the other hand, we may have grown up with parents in whom this aspect was dormant, so we never learned to awaken it in ourselves. 

A warrior is someone with the strength to stand up for what he or she believes; someone who perseveres in the face of challenges and obstacles; someone who speaks and acts in the service of an ideal; someone who protects those who are too weak to fight for themselves. Regardless of the reasons for an underdeveloped inner warrior, you may begin to notice the lack of its fiery, protective presence and wish to awaken it. You may need to stand up for yourself in a certain relationship or situation, or you may have a vision you want to realize, and you know you will need the courage, energy, and strength of a warrior to succeed. Similarly, if you find that you often feel scared, anxious, or powerless, rousing this sleeping ally may be just the antidote you need. 

One excellent way to cultivate the presence of your inner warrior is to choose a role model who embodies the qualities of bravery, strength, and vitality. This person could be a character in a myth, movie, or book, or a historical or living person you admire. Simply close your eyes each day and contemplate the quality of energy that attracts you to this person, knowing that the same potential lives within you. Confirm for yourself that you are capable of handling this energy responsibly, and stoke the fire of your own inner courage.

Envisioning yourself in a peaceful setting such as a beautiful garden or a quiet forest should leave you feeling calm and refreshed.

By consciously releasing stressful thoughts and adopting a peaceful mind-set, we give ourselves the clarity we need to effectively overcome challenges. Our first reaction to challenges and problems can often be to fight them. While this can be effective in certain circumstances, we can often resolve them with less effort if we simply relax our minds and open ourselves to solutions. By releasing our worries and remaining calm, we develop the clarity to come up with creative solutions and resolve any difficulties that face us. We then feel more empowered when facing challenges, knowing that we can overcome them with focused intention. By letting go of troubled thoughts today, you are enhancing your ability to devise effective solutions to problems.

The Power of Not Knowing

The Power of Not Knowing

There is freedom in admitting that you don't know something, as that allows for a new learning experience to emerge.


There is wisdom in not knowing, and it is a wise person who can say, "I don't know." For no one knows everything. There are many types of wisdom -- from intellectual to emotional to physical intelligence. Yet, even deemed experts in their fields do not know all there is to know about mathematics, yoga, literature, psychology, or art. It is a true master who professes ignorance, for only an empty vessel can be filled. 

There are many things in life that we don't know, and there are many things we may have no interest in finding out. There is freedom in saying "I don't know." When we admit that we don't know something, we can then open ourselves up to the opportunity to learn. And there is power in that. We can't possibly know everything. And when we think we do, we limit ourselves from growing and learning more than what we already do know. A person who can admit to not knowing tends to be more intellectually and emotionally confident than someone who pretends to know everything. They also tend to be more comfortable with who they are and don't feel the need to bluff or cover up any perceived ignorance. People can actually end up appearing more foolish when they act as if they know something that they don't.

We would be wise to respect people who freely admit when they don't know something. They are being honest, with us and with themselves. And we, too, should feel no shame in saying, "I don't know." In doing so, we open ourselves up to the unknown. We can then discover what lies beyond our current levels of understanding. It is the wise person in life that answers questions with a question and inspires the pursuit of internal answers with a funny face, a shrug, and a comical, "I don't know."

A wave of irritation may come over you today, leaving you feeling reactive and emotional. The deluge of feelings running through your mind can make it difficult to concentrate and to think clearly. However, you can ease the frustration you may feel as your emotions fluctuate by making a conscious effort to exist in the moment. If you can recall that what you experience in one moment will differ from the experience of the next moment, you may find it becomes easier to let go of the emotions that enter unbidden into your mind. Focusing on simple aspects of your experience today, such as the rise and fall of your breath, can help you achieve a sense of calm. Once you are more relaxed, you may find it easier to identify the source of your emotional turmoil.

Allowing your emotions to freely pass in and out of your mind can help you free yourself from the agitation caused by fluctuating feelings and regain your clarity of thought. When our emotions are chaotic, the temptation to grab hold of one out of many in order to use it as an anchor is great. But because our feelings are fluid, letting them come and go as they will allows you to acknowledge each and set it free. A momentary emotion that you have accepted will no longer bother you. As you recognize individual emotions, the burden you have carried in your mind will lighten and you'll be able to focus once again on single thoughts. Experiencing your emotions as they come today will help you release them.
