Interview With Sarah Rector and Jacqui Justice DailyOM: The tummy, for most people, is a really difficult place to tone and tighten. Why is this, Sarah?
Sarah Rector: I hear this all the time from my new clients, how they struggle to tighten their tummy area. I often see people in the gym doing hundreds of abdominal crunches and not understanding why they are not seeing the changes they want. Your core needs a variety of exercises combined with a wholesome diet if you really want to see real change. An out-of-shape tummy is a result of poor diet and eating habits, as well as a lack of core-focused exercise, which can result in stored fat and excess weight in the tummy area. Sometimes diet is the main problem, especially if there is too much sugar and salt in your diet. I always recommend a healthy eating plan combined with great calorie-burning exercises to increase your heart rate and burn excess fat. This dynamic program of diet and exercise is how you will see real, lasting change in your tummy!
DailyOM: From a nutritional perspective, Jacqui, what do you see as the main cause of a stomach that is bloated?
Jacqui Justice: Stomach bloating is such a common complaint and a source of frustration for so many people due to the discomfort it causes, and let's face it, how it looks. There are actually many nutrition-related reasons why a person might experience bloating, but the good news is, once you figure out the cause, you can easily get rid of it. Bloat factors include excess dietary sodium, not enough fiber in the diet or increasing fiber too quickly, eating too fast or when stressed, and eating too much for the digestive system to handle at one time. But the main causes that I see for bloating are lactose intolerance and gluten intolerance. Dairy and gluten can cause inflammation in the gut resulting in significant bloating and a lot of discomfort. Avoiding these foods generally results in not only the elimination of bloating, but a greater sense of wellness and energy. In this course, we will discuss bloat-free alternatives that students will really enjoy. We will also look at digestively unfriendly foods, like sugar, carbonated beverages, coffee, alcohol, and highly-processed foods, which all cause inflammation in the gut, are hard to digest, and result in bloating for many people. There are also healthy bloat-producing foods, such as cruciferous veggies, legumes, apples, and dried fruits. These foods bypass normal digestion and get fermented by bacteria in the lower intestine, which can lead to gas and bloating. We do not want to completely avoid these healthy foods, and I discuss strategies for eating them without the negative side effects.
DailyOM: Are there other factors that cause bloating?
JJ: Yes, there are. Besides the above, lack of hydration is a common cause of bloating. It may sound crazy, but to rid yourself of bloat (water retention), you have to drink more water. Your body will hold onto excess water if you do not give it what it needs. Plus, if you are even mildly dehydrated, your metabolism can dip seriously. Hydrating properly with water helps to naturally flush your system of excess water, toxins, and sodium that you may be retaining. In addition, drinking more water helps you feel fuller and addresses the false hunger that dehydration can cause, so you end up eating and snacking less. Another important factor that causes bloating is a lack of HCL (hydrochloric acid), an enzyme pumped out by the parietal cells of your stomach to help break down protein. Some people do not have adequate levels and they become gassy and bloated soon after meals. I discuss strategies for fixing this issue as well.
DailyOM: This course has mat work and cardio work. Tell us, Sarah, how you use both of these and why are they both important?
SR: Not only do I love variety, but variety for toning and tightening the tummy is the most effective method. You have to do the calorie-burning cardio exercises to encourage the breakdown of the fat, as well as the toning mat exercises to tighten the muscles and skin after the calorie burning exercises. Sounds like quite a process, but no need to panic! For those who are not cardio fitness enthusiasts, you will be fine. I slowly introduce cardio in Day 3, giving you time to first get comfortable with moving and feeling the muscles in your tummy engage. This is extremely important, so you know how to feel the activation process of working out. Day 3 is a good place to start cardio, as the moves are gentle and alternatives are offered.
DailyOM: What physical changes can a student expect to see after completing this course?
SR: After completing the course the first time around, you will definitely feel your tummy muscles engaged. Also, your strength will have been gradually building. As you continue to practice the workouts, you can expand on them by adding some equipment of your choice, such as light hand weights of either 2, 3, or 5 lbs. and even some light ankle weights. If equipment is not easily accessible to you, you can simply add more reps to an exercise to increase the intensity. These kinds of additions will keep you and your tummy engaged, resulting in a tighter, flatter tummy.
DailyOM: Does the course include any recipes or useful eating strategies?
JJ: Yes! Students are going to learn dietary hacks and strategies for eliminating bloating. They will learn what foods cause bloating and what foods help eliminate it, as well as other factors that can lead to belly bloating and how to troubleshoot them. Each lesson includes at least four flavorful and delicious bloat-free recipes that are related to the subject matter in that lesson. The student will come away from this course with a bloat-free belly, increased energy, and a greater sense of wellness.
