Emily: Welcome, Dr. Carolyn! To start, how would you define "external validation," and why is it such an important cycle for us to break free from?
Dr. Carolyn: For me, external validation is really about chasing approval, recognition, or praise from the world outside of ourselves so we can feel valued or worthy. It's a deeply human, universal behavior. Think about it: From the time we're small children, we learn that approval from our parents or teachers is how we get safety, love, and belonging. It's completely normal and common.
The challenge arises when this external search becomes the main or primary source of our self-worth. That's when we start to unconsciously shape our whole identity around what we think other people want or expect. In doing that, we actually lose touch with what's authentic and true within us. We get stuck in this continuous cycle of seeking peace and fulfillment from others, which, as we all know, is impossible to find in any lasting way. But here's the empowering part — you have the power to step off that merry-go-round. You can cultivate a deep sense of worth and trust that comes from within. That's what this journey is all about. Once you really grasp that, and truly believe it, the sky is the limit for your personal well-being.
Emily: What are the key practical shifts we can expect to walk away with?
Dr. Carolyn: You'll finally see how that external seeking has been impacting your life in ways you didn't even realize. But more importantly, you'll get practical tools to flip the script: strategies for self-compassion, ways to shut down negative thought patterns, and a deep sense of inner worth. The biggest takeaway? You get to choose you again. That connection is available the second you decide to reach for it.
Emily: We all have those days where the "not enough" voice gets loud. How do you personally handle setbacks or moments of deep self-doubt?
Dr. Carolyn: They still happen all the time! This work doesn't make those thoughts disappear, but it gives you the power to choose what they mean. My favorite trick is to take one single deep breath; it creates just enough space to respond thoughtfully rather than react habitually. I also use the mantra: "I'm exactly where I'm meant to be". It puts the control back in my hands. I always tell my students: "Practice when you don't need it, so it's available and familiar when you do".
Emily: What is one simple practice we can try today to shift our perspective?
Dr. Carolyn: The most important thing is to find a self-awareness practice that truly works for you — whether that's meditation, sitting quietly, or even a daily device-free walk. For me, it was journaling, because getting those swirling thoughts down on paper gives you this incredible distance to see, "Wait a minute, just because I think it, doesn't mean it's true." Through this practice, you truly learn how powerful your thoughts are in shaping your entire life, and the great news is, you get to choose to change them when they stop serving you.
The key to starting is to always go smaller than you think. Skip the "going all in" mindset — it almost never works and just leads to burnout. Instead, make it manageable and repeatable. Try just two minutes of gratitude, or three minutes of quiet sitting, and build from there. That's exactly how I began my own consistent meditation practice: with just three minutes in the morning, in my jammies, no big agenda. Slowly, I extended the time, and now where I used to cover silence with noise and chaos, I actually seek the quiet. Don't underestimate the power of that small, repeatable shift.
Emily: Lastly, who would benefit most from your course?
Dr. Carolyn: Honestly, all of us! But specifically, if you're a high-achiever constantly pushing yourself, a people-pleaser putting everyone else first, or you're just plain tired of feeling like you aren't enough, this is for you. We use tools that create immediate awareness — which is the must-have for any real change. After just seven brief lessons, you'll have a literal roadmap for boosting your confidence from the inside out. It's a universal path to self-acceptance, and I'm here to remind you of your inherent wisdom every step of the way.
