While your feelings may be real for you right now, it is important to remember that the events that triggered these emotions are long gone. Keeping your thoughts focused on the present may not completely relieve your feelings, but you may find greater peace of mind knowing that currently there is nothing that is negatively affecting you. Should sad memories arise today, you can try taking a deep breath and just letting the thought float by without holding onto or analyzing it and this could make you feel much more open and free.
Recognizing that our past worries only really affect us when we mull over them in the present allows us to cultivate a greater sense of peace and acceptance in our lives. Even though there will always be times when we need to process the pain of the past, it is much more beneficial for our overall wellbeing if we concentrate our efforts on the wonders that exist in our lives right now, for by doing so we will understand that the past can only really affect us through our thoughts. Remaining in the present will help you to let go of the past by keeping your focus on the marvel of who you are today.
